This is the 2018 edition of McKinsey’s annual review of private markets. New analyses have been developed drawn from our long-running research on private markets, based on the industry’s leading sources of data. Interviews with executives at some of the world’s largest and most influential GPs and LPs have also been conducted. Finally, insights have been gathered from the colleagues around the world who work closely with asset owners and managers.

 

 MIFID II. A new paradigm for investment research. Report of September 2017

The provision of investment research is set to change dramatically in Europe under the revised Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II). The traditional business model of brokers providing bundled research and execution services to asset managers will end. Investment banks and other research providers will have to establish a price for research and charge clients separately for those services. Asset managers will have to develop research budgets and determine how to allocate the costs of research.
